Teaching the faith is intimately tied to discipleship, for as Jesus said at the end of Matthew's gospel, "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." (Mt. 28:19-20)

Pope Francis reminds us in Evangelii Gaudium that to be called (vocare) by God as catechist is a call to missionary discipleship (120). The call to discipleship is a call to deepened relationship with Christ.
